Rate Reduction for Additional Customer Relief

In an effort to provide additional financial relief, we are pleased to announce that WA will be implementing a rate decrease for Ontario personal auto customers on a temporary basis effective October 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021, for both New Business and Renewals.

WA will be applying a -4% rate reduction for Ontario personal auto premiums in addition to already implemented relief measures. This reduction will result in a meaningful return for customers with an overall impact of more than $15 million in additional premium relief.

Is there a minimum or maximum payment?

No, there isn’t a minimum or maximum payment. Every personal auto customer will receive a one-time payment equivalent to 20% of three months’ premium regardless of what their rates are.

Gore Mutual Insurance Company

Posted: May 22, 2020 | Response Applies To: Payments, Premium Relief

How is the payment calculated?

The payment will be the equivalent of 20% of three months’ premium.

For example, if a customer’s annual auto premium as of April 9, 2020, is $1200 on a 12-month policy, then three months’ premium is $300 and 20% of that is $60. So, in that case, the payment will be approximately $60.

Please note that the calculation is not based on a customer’s monthly billing payments. Instead, we’re using the number of days in a policy term to do a more accurate calculation. The Total Policy Premium listed on the first page of the Certificate of Automobile Insurance is the annual premium being used to calculate the payment.

Why is the premium reduction payment only for personal auto customers?

We recognize that because of the pandemic and social distancing mandates, many people are staying home and not driving regularly. Our personal auto premium reduction payment was created to provide some much-needed support for customers during this extraordinary time.

Commercial auto policyholders not using their work vehicle(s) because the pandemic should connect with their broker to discuss possible options including amending their commercial auto coverage.

Tips to keep your property safe during a lockdown

  • Protect against wildlife
  • Check the attic for any pests that may have taken up residence, such as wasps, raccoons or squirrels.
  • Cover mattresses and bedding with plastic sheeting to keep rodents out.
  • Close stove pipes, chimney flues and fireplace doors to prevent unwanted animals from getting inside.
  • Worried about bears? Consider installing heavy shutters—not plywood—on windows to prevent them from getting into the house.
  • Remove all food from the house to avoid attracting wildlife. (Canned goods are fine to stay.)
  • Protect against the unpredictable
  • Ask a local resident if they can periodically check on your property while you are away, or hire a property management company to do so.
  • If it is safe to do so, trim any tree branches that could interfere with power lines or your house.
  • If you haven’t done so already, lock ATVs and other recreational vehicles in a shed.
  • Have a note placed on your front door, advising any potential thieves that valuables have been removed or locked securely.
  • Protect against water damage
  • Inspect gutters and drain spouts for any obstructions that could lead to ice damming during the spring freeze-thaw cycle.
  • Ensure that you’ve turned off power and water to the property. If it is located in an area that is still experiencing freezing temperatures, use environmentally friendly anti-freeze to keep pipes from freezing and breaking.
  • During flood season, ensure that floating docks are secured safely on land.
  • If you have a sump pump, ensure it is working.
  • Protect against fire
  • Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace the batteries each year.
  • Clean any wood-burning stoves or fireplaces.
  • If you leave the power on for an alarm system or a sump pump, unplug major appliances to lower the risk of an electrical fire.

Maintaining idle vehicles: follow these tips to protect your vehicle

  • Keep it clean and full
  • Ensure that all fluids are topped off—especially motor oil and gas. Keeping a gas tank full prevents moisture build while the vehicle remains idle.
  • After changing the oil, drive the vehicle for a few kilometres to ensure that the oil circulates throughout the engine.
  • Wash the outside of the vehicle thoroughly to get rid of any salt, dirt or snow/ice buildup to prevent rust.
  • Clean the inside of the vehicle. Dispose of any organic material that might attract pests.
  • Keep it running
  • Start the car and leave it running until it achieves a normal operating temperature at least once a week. Warning: it is incredibly important that you do not run a vehicle in an enclosed space, such as a garage.
  • Keep your battery charged. If you’re certain that you won’t be using a vehicle at all for an extended period, remove the battery altogether and store it in a cool, dry place.
  • Keep it parked
  • Park indoors if possible. Doing so will prevent moisture and dirt from affecting the paint. Storing a vehicle indoors is also one of the best ways to prevent it from being broken into or stolen.
  • Do not engage the parking brake, as doing so can wear down the brake pads.
  • Put the vehicle on jacks, concrete blocks or pieces of wood to prevent tires from flattening.
  • Check the tire pressure and keep them inflated. If the vehicle will remain idle for an extended period of time, consider adding a little extra pressure to the tires.
  • Expert advice
  • Talk to your mechanic to see if your vehicle has any other specific concerns that need to be addressed during a dormant period.

For these customers, Wawanesa has set aside the exclusion related to the use of personal vehicles for the purpose of delivering food and other products. We encourage our policyholders, brokers and employees to give back to their communities in times of need and we hope this helps. It also has the added benefit of allowing policyholders to gain other forms of income if they are experiencing financial difficulties because of layoffs during the COVID-19 crisis.

I purchased a new vehicle and I am unable to get the vehicle transferred into my name. What do I do?

You will need to contact a Client Account Manager at Algoma Insurance Brokers Limited to confirm that there’s a valid purchase agreement or signed ownership form as evidence of ownership by you, the named insured on the policy. You will need to make sure you registered the vehicle once the provincial office has reopened. Also at that time, we will require a copy of the ownership now registered in your name for our files.

The occasional young driver on my policy was getting the student away at school discount of 50%. However, my son/daughter is now back at home due to the pandemic. Do we still qualify for the discount or do I need to remove it?

If the student intends to return to school after the pandemic, then keep the discount on the policy. If the student does not intend to return to school after the pandemic, then the discount should be removed.

I am using my vehicle to deliver food and medical supplies and I am getting compensated for it. Will I be covered by my automobile policy?

Typically this would not be covered by a standard personal auto policy. However, specifically during the COVID-19 pandemic, if you are now driving your own vehicle to deliver food or medical supplies to those in need, we’ll review this on a case-by-case basis. In these situations, please contact a Client Account Manager at Algoma Insurance Brokers Limited and we’ll do our best to find a temporary solution to help you. Please note: carrying passengers for compensation is not included in this temporary allowance. Also, if the usage continues once the crisis is over, your policy would need to be amended and your coverage changed to reflect this change in usage.

I spend six months out of the year in the U.S. and I take my vehicle with me. Because of COVID-19, I had to change my travel plans and fly back to Canada urgently, leaving my vehicle in the U.S. This will exceed the maximum time (180 days) that my vehicle is allowed outside of Canada. What should I do?

For existing customers only, we can accommodate vehicles outside of Canada for longer than 180 days (including Lifestyle policies). Please contact one of the Client Account Managers at Algoma Insurance Brokers Limited and we will work with you to find a solution.

I am unable to visit my seasonal/secondary dwelling during the crisis so the time this dwelling is unoccupied may exceed 60 consecutive days. What will Aviva do in these circumstances?

Aviva Insurance understands that it might not be possible and/or advisable for customers to visit their seasonal/secondary properties during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aviva doesn’t expect existing customers to visit these properties if they’re unable to due to travel restrictions and/or health issues during the emergency period. This applies to all property policies, including Secondary Homeowners and our Cottage/Seasonal (RetreatLife) program.

Why isn’t Aviva Insurance offering a flat discount?

We recognize that each customer situation is unique. Therefore, we don’t think a “one-size-fits-all” approach is the best option. Some customers aren’t using their vehicles at all, while others continue to drive the same kilometres each day, and their biggest concern is their ability to make their next payment. We believe we have a range of solutions that will allow each customer to be treated as an individual, in order to meet their specific needs.

What if I’m using my vehicle to pick up food for my neighbours. Will this be a problem for my Auto coverage?

No. Helping neighbours as a volunteer is a wonderful way to assist the community and you will continue to have auto coverage when doing so. However, food delivery on a commercial basis (ie. UberEats, Foodora, Skip the Dishes or any other delivery service performed for any business including the grocery store or pharmacy) is not covered under the personal auto insurance policy.

If you need to amend your policy to reflect this change in usage, please contact one of the Client Account Managers at Algoma Insurance Brokers Limited to assist.

No additional coverage or endorsements are needed. My son/daughter who is a university student has returned home due to school closures. They will be home for six months instead of the regular four-month break and have access to my vehicles. Should I be removing the ‘away at school discount’ applied that is currently on my automobile policy?

No. If the student is intending on returning to school, the discount can remain on.
However, if the student is not returning to school (i.e. has graduated or will graduate and will not be returning), then the discount should be removed. If you are unsure if the student will return to school, the discount should be removed and can be re-added at a later date if the student will return to school.
